About Nysa
At Sultanhisar, Nysa is a Carian city built on both sides of a deep ravine and connected by bridges, tunnels and terraces. Its theatre, library, council house and gymnasium reflect a developed educational and cultural life.
History
Nysa is generally understood to have been refounded under Seleucid rule in the Hellenistic period. Fertile farmland and the east–west route through the Maeander valley supported growth. The geographer Strabo is said to have studied here. Its theatre, library, gymnasium and bridges were renewed under Rome; engineering works carried movement across the ravine. A bishopric in late antiquity, Nysa continued on a smaller scale under Byzantium.
