About Syedra
East of Alanya, Syedra occupies a mountainside overlooking the Mediterranean. Its colonnaded street, large baths, cistern cave and mosaics reflect a city linking coast and hinterland. Effective water infrastructure supported this elevated settlement.
History
Syedra's history extends at least to Hellenistic times, when it controlled routes between Cilicia and Pamphylia. Anti-piracy measures and regional trade encouraged Roman growth. The colonnaded street, bath-gymnasium, fountains and public buildings reflect second- and third-century CE prosperity. Churches and strengthened defences followed in late antiquity. Occupation continued under Byzantium before gradual medieval contraction.
