About Selinus
On the Gazipaşa coast, Selinus was an important western Cilician city with a seaward acropolis, harbour structures and Roman monuments. Emperor Trajan's death here led to its commemoration under the name Traianopolis.
History
Selinus developed for coastal trade and defence in Hellenistic times. Trajan died here in 117 CE while returning from his eastern campaign, after which the city was honoured as Traianopolis. Baths, an agora, aqueducts and funerary monuments were built under Rome. Churches and defences became prominent in late antiquity, when it was a bishopric. A medieval castle shows continued use of the acropolis.
