About Perre
Near Adıyaman, Perre is remembered as one of Commagene's five major cities, with rock-cut chamber tombs, stone sarcophagi and an ancient fountain. Its extensive necropolis reveals Roman prosperity and family burial traditions along regional roads.
History
Perre developed at a strategic point between Euphrates crossings and Taurus routes under Commagene. It remained an important stop on Roman military and commercial networks. Rock-cut tombs were reused in different periods; inscriptions and reliefs illuminate local families. A bishopric in late antiquity, the city continued under Byzantium. Modern settlement has grown over part of the ancient area.
