About Doliche
Around Dülük in Gaziantep, Doliche was a long-lived ancient city and the birthplace of the cult of Jupiter Dolichenus, which spread across the Roman world. Its hilltop sanctuary and rock-cut tombs connect the religious history of Commagene with late antiquity.
History
Doliche stood near trade routes on Commagene's western edge. The storm-god cult on Dülük Baba Hill spread under the name Jupiter Dolichenus through Roman soldiers and merchants. The city continued through Roman and late antique times. Christianity changed the sanctuary's role in the fourth century. Excavations investigate the hilltop temple, an early Christian basilica and public buildings in the lower city.
