About Uzuncaburç
At Uzuncaburç, Diokaisareia grew around the sanctuary of Zeus Olbios in the Olba region. A tall tower, Corinthian temple, ceremonial gateway and colonnaded street reveal the transition from Hellenistic priestly rule to Roman civic life.
History
The site was the sanctuary of Zeus Olbios under Olba's priestly rulers in Hellenistic times. An independent city called Diokaisareia developed around it under Rome. Temple, monumental gateways, theatre and colonnaded street became part of its urban fabric. The temple was converted into a church in late antiquity, with further religious buildings added. The village of Uzuncaburç developed among the remains, demonstrating continuing settlement.
