About Sebastopolis
At Sulusaray, Sebastopolis is an ancient settlement of the Kelkit basin with nearby thermal springs, a Roman bath, mosaics and wall remains. The modern town overlies it, leaving scattered remains in and around the centre.
History
The name Sebastopolis is connected with imperial worship. The city developed on regional roads under Rome. Inscriptions and coins illuminate local administration and economic life. Baths, mosaic-decorated buildings and waterworks reflect imperial prosperity. It is recorded as a bishopric in late antiquity and remained occupied under Byzantium. Earthquakes and later building altered much of its ancient fabric.
