About Sagalassos
On mountain terraces above Ağlasun, Sagalassos preserves an impressive ensemble of Roman public squares and water architecture. The re-erected Antonine Nymphaeum, Upper Agora, theatre and heroon stand against a Taurus backdrop.
History
Urbanisation became evident in the Iron Age and early Hellenistic period. After Alexander's campaign in 333 BCE, the city passed under Hellenistic kingdoms and later became a major Roman centre of Pisidia. Imperial support, pottery production and fertile surroundings fostered monumental growth in the first to third centuries CE. Earthquakes, epidemics and economic change reduced occupation in late antiquity, but smaller-scale settlement persisted into the Middle Ages. Archaeological work studies architecture alongside environmental history and daily life.
