About Pompeiopolis
At Taşköprü, Pompeiopolis was a principal Roman urban centre of Paphlagonia. A colonnaded street, theatre and richly mosaicked residences reveal the scale of administrative and commercial life in the Gökırmak valley.
History
The city formed part of Pompey's reorganisation following his Pontic campaigns around 64/63 BCE. Controlling roads and a fertile valley, it acquired regional capital status under Rome. Public buildings and elite houses expanded in the second and third centuries CE. It continued as a bishopric in late antiquity. Excavations are revealing its plan, theatre and residential architecture.
