About Blaundos
Surrounded by deep valleys connected to Ulubey Canyon, Blaundos occupies a defensive plateau reached through a narrow approach. Its gate, walls, public buildings and rock-cut tombs preserve the outline of a Hellenistic and Roman city.
History
Blaundos is thought to have been founded in connection with Macedonian communities settling in Anatolia after Alexander's campaigns. It passed from Hellenistic kingdoms to Roman rule. Its citizens preserved a local identity expressed on coins as the Macedonians of Blaundos. Temples, a theatre, stadium and waterworks were built under Rome. It became a bishopric in late antiquity, while the rock-cut tombs were used in different periods.
