About Apollonia
At Gölyazı on Lake Uluabat, Apollonia ad Rhyndacum is a distinctive Mysian settlement whose walls, necropolis and townscape extend across a peninsula and islands. Ancient remains share streets with houses from later Greek and Ottoman communities.
History
The city is thought to have developed under Pergamene influence during the Hellenistic period. Lake Uluabat and its connection with the Rhyndacus facilitated regional movement of agricultural goods and stone. Walls, a theatre, temples and funerary monuments marked its Roman growth. It became a bishopric and fortified island settlement under Byzantium. The continuing development of modern Gölyazı over the ancient site has left its remains interwoven with houses and streets.
